Settling into Toodyay.

In early 1948, four cheaply built State Houses (W.A. Government owned houses) came up for rent in Henley Street, Toodyay. Houses were still in short supply from the war and as there were now four people in the Buzzard family, and one on the way, they were given priority to rent a house over the other applicants.

Brian Jnr. remembers that the children were bathed in the concrete wash troughs in the “laundry” at the back of the home. The trough was probably used as the children were particularly ‘grubby’ after playing in the yard and the proper bath was not going to be dirtied. The clothes line was similar to the one below.

On 8th June 1948, Don and Brian’s first, and only daughter, Theresa Margaret Buzzard was born at the St. John of God’s Hospital, Northam.

The family thrived in Toodyay and more than a year in the town, they decided to go on a holiday to Mandurah, W.A.

On holiday in Mandurah

Owning his own business, Brian was very intent on making it successful. The rest of the family were busy at school and Don was busy tending the children, so their occasional holiday away from Toodyay was a highlight for the children.

Don and Brian’s third son, Patrick Millar Buzzard, was born in St. John of God’s Northam Hospital on 24th November 1951.

In February 1952 the family went on holiday again, however they went to Safety Bay this time.
